''Ilmatar'' was recorded in late 1999 and released in some parts of Europe in autumn 2000, initially on the label Wicklow/BMG, which, however, was closed down shortly afterwards. For the release of Ilmatar in Germany, Värttinä decided to go with intuition. ''Ilmatar'' has already been praised by many renowned critics as ''perhaps the best work Värttinä has produced to date''. The famous producer Hughues de Courson has given the band's sound, which often pounced on the listener with primordial power, new volume and depth, thereby releasing entirely new qualities. Tracks like ''Liiqua'' [4], ''Linnunmieli'' [8], the rebellious ''Käppee'' [2], the haunting ''Aijo'' [6] and the endlessly mournful ''Meri'' [11] prove that Värttinä still deserve being described as ''the best band in Finland and one of the best in the world''. It is a fascinating album which exists somewhere between tradition and originality.
