Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) composed the Organ Sonata No. 1 in 1957. Like many of his contemporaries (Ahrens, Bornefeld, Hessenberg, Pepping), he wrote his organ music under the influence of Bach and the so-called 'organ movement', providing hardly any information on the dynamics, articulation, phrasing or registration in the musical text. The former organist of the Cathedral of Cologne, Clemens Ganz, has added notes on interpretation to the present new edition which are based on his personal acquaintance with the composer and his experience of the performance practice. He indicates ways to authentically interpret the organ music of the 1950s.
